Texas Tribune targeting gun rights

By Weston Hicks | 2 years ago

The Texas Tribune did their part to feed the new liberal anti-gun messaging angle that says Mexico would be in better shape if the United States had tighter gun control.

The argument for this position is bad enough, but even more surprising is the willingness of the Texas Tribune to take on water in order to oppose gun rights.

Gun control is so widely opposed and legislatively weak in Texas that there is usually very little conversation around it. Others have concluded that it’s the wrong issue for liberals to carry their agenda on, but the Texas Tribune must not think so.

First, let’s imagine a United States with zero gun sales so that Mexico no longer received American guns. That never stopped Cuba from getting guns. What would stop Mexico from filling the gap by importing Chinese guns? Guns from South America? Any guns that make their way into the Caribbean? The answer is that nothing would stop them from getting the guns they want, but fixing Mexico has never been the aim of the liberal anti-gun lobby, and it isn’t their aim now.

Secondly, Mexico indeed has some of the worst gun crime on Planet Earth. Mexico also has some of the most oppressive gun laws on Planet Earth. Mexico is a case study that proves the old adage, “when you outlaw guns, only outlaws have guns.”

Perhaps we Texans should be happy. Our liberals have only succeeded in making schools, churches, and a few other places into violent criminal high-confidence areas. Mexican liberals have succeeded in making the entire country into one big violent criminal high-confidence area.

Finally, even assuming Mexico would have fewer guns if we put the tighter controls on gun sales and exports, why would Americans trust the federal government to respect gun laws in the wake of the Fast and Furious scandal?

Gun laws only disarm law abiding citizens, lowering the level of respect they receive from both criminals and their government.

As for the Tribune, pushing against gun rights in this state is quite bold. Maybe we should applaud them for their guts and conviction in pushing the liberal agenda.
