John Carona's Liberal Alliances
Senator John Carona wants to be the next Lt. Governor of Texas. For that to occur he needs several things to happen, including a David Dewhurst victory in the U.S. Senate race. He also needs Texans to remain oblivious to his liberal alliances and agenda.
It was reported this weekend that Carona was spreading rumors about Senator Dan Patrick’s personal life. Carona’s innuendo is only his most recent move positioning to ascend to Lt. Gov should the position become vacant. His attempt on the whole is not going well.
The first fail for Carona came in 2011 when he gave $10,000 to Scott O’Grady, a political newcomer pitted against Rep. Ken Paxton, to fill the open SD-8. O’Grady dropped out after reading the conservative writing on the wall.
In 2012 Carona has donated $20,000 to Todd Smith who is running against Kelly Hancock in an open SD-9. Hancock has been endorsed by the Young Conservatives of Texas, Empower Texans and power house money machine Texans for Lawsuit Reform. Running counter to YCT, TFR, TLR and their grassroots networks has repercussions.
Since Carona won’t be able to buy enough Republicans to win he is also buying Democrat fealty. In his Democrat recruiting he has given to liberal Democrat Senator Judith Zaffirini donating $5,000 in 2011. The pair’s alliance was on display this week when Zaffirini came to Carona’s aid in attacking Dan Patrick.
The Texas Senate will be considerably more conservative in the 2013 session but with a liberal Lt. Gov at the helm conservative progress will be markedly stymied or endangered by the likes of Carona and Zaffirini.
Carona is on the record rejecting conservative’s call for an interim Lt. Governor to be selected from within the ranks of the GOP by Republican Senators. Keeping Democrats involved gives the liberal Corona a chance.
Senator Tommy Williams has also recieved campaign money from Carona. This article is part of a series examining campaign finance reports.
