Joe Straus tied to Texas Conservative Roundtable

By Daniel Greer | 3 years ago

When the Texas Conservative Roundtable was launched Texas Tribune editor Ross Ramsey noted it was set up to counter conservative groups like Empower Texans. At the time, we wrote the natural beneficiary of such a group was embattled House Speaker Joe Straus.

Now Joe Straus has been tied directly to TXCR through his campaign finance report. Straus doled out $40,000 to TXCR board member Brian Haley through Pericles Strategies. The fees were classified as consulting expenses and date back to January. Haley is a junior member of the harem of consultants employed by Straus.

Pericles Strategies registered with the state in January 2012. TXCR launched publicly in January after being formed over a year ago.

Setting up groups at the last minute is necessity for liberals masquerading as conservatives. Given time conservative voters will always sniff out a rat. It’s because of this that the TXCR waited till the last minute to create a bizarro scorecard only to be forced to change it after it was widely panned as a liberal hack job.

These groups and bad actors are becoming easier to discover as we uncover their network of friends.

This article is part of a series examining campaign finance reports.
